STEMINIST Book Club

The STEMINIST Book Club was started by our dear event manager Neja Česnik, who remains the leader of our monthly readings. Each month we invite you to join in and indulge in a different book, discovering new stories of women or finding your inner voice.

Joining the book club does not have to be a commitment - if you do not find the interest in current's months book, feel free to join in next time, or recommend a book yourself!

Each book will be discussed Last Monday of the month, 5pm GMT on our discord, #book-club channel  - make sure to join us!

"Atomic Habits" by James Clear

No matter your goals, this book can offer a framework for improving your everyday. If you're having trouble changing your habits, the problem isn't you - the problem is your system. Bad habits repeat themselves again and again not because you don't want to change, but because you have the wrong system for change. You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. Here, you'll get a proven system that can take you to new heights.

We will be discussing this book and it's takeaways on our Discord server on March 15th.

"The Moment of Lift" by Melinda Gates

In this candid and inspiring book, Gates traces her awakening to the link between women's empowerment and the health of societies. She shows some of the tremendous opportunities that exist right now to "turbo-charge" change. And she provides simple and effective ways each one of us can make a difference.
Throughout, Gates introduces us to her heroes in the movement towards equality, offers startling data, shares moving conversations she's had with women from all over the world - and shows how we can all get involved.

This book will be discussed on our Discord #book-club channel on February 1st.

"Invisible Women" by Caroline Criado Perez

This book breaks down the bias society has crafted against women with strong research.

From the plague of unpaid work, social invisibility, and medical neglect - it shows the reader why gender-neutral does not equate to gender equality. The message is clear, that we have to stop pretending women are too complex to fit in, especially when we live in a world that wasn’t designed for them.

This months book club is open to everyone - not just WIS members as we feel it is an important and insightful read for anyone!

We will meet virtually and discuss key topics in this book via Microsoft Teams on Monday 23rd November at 6pm.

"Change by Design" by Tim Brown | September

The myth of innovation is that brilliant ideas leap fully formed from the mind of geniuses. The reality is that most innovations come from a process of rigorous examination through which great ideas are identified and developed before being realized as new offerings and capabilities.

This book introduces the idea of design thinking, the collaborative process by which the designer's sensibilities and methods are employed to math people's needs not only with what is technically feasible and a viable business strategy. In short, design thinking converts need into demand. It's a human-centered approach to problem solving that helps people and organizations become more innovative and more creative.

This book will be discussed on our Discord #book-club channel on 21st October 2020 at 6pm.

"You are a Badass" by Jen Sincero

First read of the STEMINIST book club!

It's a self-help book for people who desperately want to improve their lives but don’t want to get busted doing it. Identify and change the self-sabotaging beliefs and behaviors that stop you from getting what you want, and create a life you totally love. By the end of this book, you’ll understand why you are how you are, how to love what you can’t change, how to change what you don’t love, and how to use The Force to kick some serious ass.

The book will be discussed August 31st at 5pm on our Discord server.
